Peter Kraftl is Professor and Chair in Human Geography at the University of Birmingham, where he serves as Deputy Head of the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. He holds a BA (Hons.) and PhD in Geography from the University of Wales Swansea. His research focuses on children's interactions with environmental processes, sustainable urban design, geographies of education, and architectural spaces.
His work integrates theories of emotion, affect, and materiality within childhood studies, emphasizing topics like alternative education, environmental learning, and youth resilience. Recent projects include collaborations on climate change pedagogies (Canada/Australia), COVID-19 adaptations (Brazil/South Africa), and UK treescapes.
Key awards include Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences (2020), Royal Geographical Society Murchison Award (2020), and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (2022).
He leads major grants like the UKRI-funded Voices of the Future (GBP 1.6M) and PANEX (EUR 485K) on youth adaptations to COVID-19. He advises UNESCO's Futures of Education initiative and UK housing agencies on child-inclusive design.
Kraftl directs the NIHR Children, Young People and Families Programme and collaborates internationally through ERC/Newton-funded projects. He teaches research methods and geographies of childhood at undergraduate levels.
