Peter Kiefer is a Professor of Sound Art and Composition at the School of Music, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he has taught since 2001 and has served as head of the Sound Art-Composition department since 2009. He is also a member of the Gutenberg Academy and the 'Forschungsschwerpunkt Medienkonvergenz' at JGU. In 2017, he was honored with the GRC Fellow Award for his five-year project in sound art research.
Kiefer's research interests span Sound Art, Composition, New Media, Acoustic Ecology, and Spatial Sound. His work explores the relationship between sound, space, and perception, with particular focus on how sound installations can create experiential spaces for reflection on contemporary societal issues. His projects often investigate boundaries - both physical and conceptual - as seen in works like 'Liquid Borders' which recorded sea sounds at Europe's outermost points.
His artistic output shows a consistent trend toward creating immersive sound environments that engage with philosophical, political, and social questions. Recent works like 'Samsara – Transitions' address themes of uncertainty and change in the contemporary world, while 'Resonating Identities' transforms national anthems into a collective sound experience that questions notions of national identity. His academic publications and conference presentations focus on the theoretical foundations of sound art and its implementation in exhibition contexts.

He has also received research funding through the Gutenberg Research College for his sound art research projects. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the ZKM Karlsruhe, the German Historical Museum Berlin, and the Museum of History in Luxembourg.
Kiefer's studio practice involves creating sound installations that transform spaces into experiential environments, often collaborating with other artists and institutions. His recent projects include the 'Samsara' installation for the IN FRONT FESTIVAL 2024 in Aachen, which creates a space for reflection on contemporary global uncertainties.
