Dr. Peter Kakela is a full Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University (MSU), affiliated with the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He is an internationally recognized expert in the iron ore industry and natural resources research. His work spans energy, mining, and environmental studies, with over 120 professional publications in journals like Science and Land Economics.
Education and Background: Kakela attended MSU, where he was a standout defensive tackle on the football team from 1959–1961, earning three varsity letters. He received the Ross Trophy as an outstanding scholar-athlete and served as Senior Class Vice President.
Research and Awards: His research focuses on iron ore productivity, energy systems, and resource economics. Notable awards include the Rockefeller Fellowship for energy research, the Kellogg National Fellowship for leadership development (part-time), and the Sloan Foundation fellowship analyzing North American iron ore productivity. He also received MSU’s Community Service Award for strengthening Michigan’s seatbelt law.
Teaching: He teaches the “Introduction to Environmental Studies” course with enthusiasm. Professional affiliations include contributions to World Steel Dynamics and leadership roles in university programs like the Guyer-Seevers Natural Resource Conservation initiative.
