Peter Jones is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) within the College of Arts and Sciences. His expertise spans public budgeting and finance, education finance policy, and econometrics. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Kentucky (2014), alongside earlier degrees in Journalism and Public Budgeting.
Dr. Jones teaches in UAB’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, focusing on courses related to public budgeting, financial management, and data analysis. He is recognized for innovative teaching methods like specifications grading, emphasizing student engagement and mastery. His research explores local/state government budgeting processes, K-12 education finance, and the financial impacts of education policies.
Notably, he co-leads the Alabama Chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN), bridging academic research with policymakers and civic leaders. He also participates in the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama Roundtable and contributed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights’ state advisory committee.
Awarded the 2021 College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award, his work addresses fiscal transparency, anti-trafficking policy diffusion, and stakeholder engagement in budgeting. His recent publications analyze school district secessions, fiscal reserves, and expenditure forecasting trends.
