Peter Jonas

Peter Jonas serves as a Professor at IST Austria since 2010, where he is a founding member of the Neuroscience Research Cluster. His distinguished academic career includes prior appointments as Full Professor and Head of the Physiological Institute at the University of Freiburg (1995-2010), Associate Professor at the Technical University of Munich (1994-1995), and research positions at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research under Prof. Bert Sakmann (1990-1994).

His educational foundation comprises a Medical Doctor degree earned summa cum laude from the University of Giessen (1987) and a Habilitation from the University of Heidelberg (1992), following medical studies at Giessen (1980-1986).

Jonas's research program centers on the fundamental mechanisms of neural communication, with pioneering contributions to understanding synaptic transmission and presynaptic mechanisms. His work integrates investigations of ion channel dynamics, calcium signaling, and plasticity within specialized neural circuits, particularly those involving fast-spiking parvalbumin-expressing interneurons. This research bridges molecular neuroscience with systems-level circuit function, revealing how nanoscale physiological processes govern information processing in the brain.

His exceptional contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award (2006), ERC Advanced Grant (2010), and multiple named lectureships at Oxford and Cambridge. Additional distinctions include membership in the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Jonas has demonstrated significant leadership through editorial roles including the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science magazine (2007-present), editorial positions at The Journal of Neuroscience and Journal of Physiology, and coordination of the Collaborative Research Center "Synaptic Mechanisms of Neuronal Network Function" (SFB 780). His research has been supported by major grants including the ERC Advanced Grant and Human Frontiers Science Program funding.

As leader of the Jonas Group at IST Austria, he continues to advance the field of nanophysiology through cutting-edge investigations of synaptic function in inhibitory interneurons, maintaining an active research program that bridges basic neuroscience with potential clinical implications.
