Peter Holdsworth

Peter Holdsworth is a Professor of Physics at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon), where he has been since 1990. His research focuses on geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, phase transitions in confined geometries, and out-of-equilibrium dynamics. He earned his PhD from Oxford University in 1985 and held post-doctoral positions at the University of British Columbia and the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble.

Holdsworth’s work bridges theoretical physics and experimental collaborations, particularly in exploring monopole dynamics in spin ice materials and their emergent phenomena. He has contributed to understanding how condensed systems can host quasi-particles like magnetic monopoles, analogous to electric charges. His research also emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating statistical mechanics with computational simulations.

From 2002 to 2015, he served as Director of the Physics Department at ENS Lyon, demonstrating his commitment to academia. His awards include Senior Membership of the Institut Universitaire de France (2010) and visiting professorships at Oxford University (2007). His studies on spin ice, critical Casimir forces, and frustrated magnetism have advanced understanding of topological phases and quantum effects in complex materials.

Holdsworth’s teaching philosophy emphasizes research integration, and he collaborates with experimental groups globally to validate theoretical predictions. His lab, part of the Laboratoire de Physique at ENS Lyon, explores frontiers in condensed matter physics, including kagome ice phases and topological-sector fluctuations.
