Peter Hartley

Peter Hartley is a Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the Economics Department at the UWA Business School, University of Western Australia. He holds the BHPBilliton Professorship in Energy and Resource Economics. Previously, he served as George & Cynthia Mitchell Chair in Economics at Rice University (2007–present) and held academic roles spanning over four decades at institutions including Princeton University, ANU, Monash University, and the University of Melbourne.

Education: BSc (Pure Mathematics, ANU with First Class Honors), MSc (Economics, ANU), PhD (Economics, University of Chicago).

Research focuses on energy economics (natural gas/electricity markets), environmental economics, and dynamic optimization. Notable projects include modeling Western Australia's gas reservation policy and analyzing fossil fuel displacement costs. He has consulted for energy firms and government entities.

Teaching includes global energy markets courses. Grants from NSF, McGovern Foundation, and industry partners support his work. Collaborates with institutions like Baker Institute for Public Policy and Shell Center for Sustainable Development.
