Peter Gostomski is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury's Faculty of Engineering, where he has served since 1998. His research specializes in bioprocess engineering, with a focus on microbial biofilm systems, biofiltration, biotrickling reactors, and environmental biotechnology for degrading pollutants (e.g., methane, toluene) or producing resources (e.g., microbial protein). Key projects investigate hydrodynamic/biological fundamentals of bioreactors, metabolic uncoupling, and applications of next-generation sequencing in microbial ecology.
His research spans Bioprocessing, Bioproduction, Bioproducts, and Environmental Engineering, emphasizing real-world solutions for waste treatment and resource recovery. Recent publications (2015–2024) reveal a strong focus on optimizing biofilters using RNA-stable isotope probing, metabolic uncouplers for biomass control, and methane-driven denitrification systems. These works advance reactor design, microbial community analysis, and pollution mitigation strategies.
