Peter Goggin is an Associate Professor of English (Rhetoric) at Arizona State University, where he studies and teaches theories of literacy, environmental rhetoric, and sustainability. He is a senior sustainability scholar with ASU's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability.
His research explores how myths and legends like mermaids help people understand their relationship with the environment and make sense of the unknown. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Romania, China, Bermuda, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Austria, reflecting his interest in transnational perspectives.
As a contributor to The Conversation, he has written about mermaids and their cultural significance in 2023, 2021, and 2020, examining how these mythical creatures represent human desires, fears, and fascinations with the ocean. His work appears in various academic publications including Composition Studies, Community Literacy Journal, and Computers and Composition.
He founded and co-directs the annual Western States Rhetoric and Literacy conference, which addresses themes of sustainability, culture, transnationality, and place. His publications include editing Environmental Rhetoric and Ecologies of Place (2013) and Rhetorics, Literacies, and Narratives of Sustainability (2009), and co-editing Serendipity in Rhetoric, Writing, and Literacy Research (2018).
