Peter Glendinning is the W. J. Beale Distinguished Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the College of Arts and Letters. He has been a faculty member since 1978, specializing in photography education and practice. His work bridges academic teaching, professional photography, and global outreach through online platforms and Fulbright collaborations.
Education: MFA in Experimental Studio (1978, Syracuse University), alongside earlier degrees including BS in Photojournalism, BS in Political Science, BFA in Studio Art, and law studies—all from Syracuse University. He also studied under Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research (1973).
Research interests focus on photography pedagogy, digital media, and visual communication. He developed MSU’s first online photography course and co-authored the Coursera series Photography Basics & Beyond, which has enrolled hundreds of thousands globally. His artistic practice includes portraiture and still-life photography, with works in the George Eastman House, Temple University, and others. Notable exhibitions include Attached to the Soil at South African universities and the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory.
Awards include the Paul Varg Award (2009), William J. Beal Distinguished Faculty Award (2021), and Fulbright recognitions. He has served as a juror for art exhibits, board member of photography education associations, and Fulbright Specialist in South Africa.
Professional collaborations include work for GMAC, Panasonic, and the UAW. He currently advises via the Fulbright Specialist roster on art, journalism, and communications worldwide.
