Peter Giesl

Prof. Peter Giesl is a Professor of Mathematics and Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Sussex, part of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He holds a PhD from the Technical University Munich (2000) and has held academic positions there and at the University of Augsburg before joining Sussex in 2007. His research focuses on Dynamical Systems, including analytical and numerical methods for stability analysis, Lyapunov functions, and contraction metrics. He has collaborated with institutions such as the University of Iceland and the University of Bayreuth, and has organized international conferences like SciCADE 2022. Recognized as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, his teaching includes Linear Algebra courses for first-year students. Notable contributions include EPSRC-funded projects on Lyapunov functions and contraction metrics, with publications in journals like Journal of Computational Dynamics and Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems. Current PhD advisees include Norah Alsaiari and Jennifer Ward.

Research interests emphasize numerical methods for constructing Lyapunov functions using radial basis functions and meshless collocation, with applications to autonomous and non-autonomous systems. Recent work addresses contraction metrics for stochastic, time-periodic, and non-smooth systems, leveraging linear programming and optimization techniques. His grants include EPSRC support for solving matrix-valued differential inequalities (2023–2027) and Icelandic funding for contraction metric computations (2022–2025). Prof. Giesl is also a guest editor for Journal of Computational Dynamics and has held editorial roles in Complexity and Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems.
