Peter E Newburger

Peter E Newburger is a Professor at UMass Chan Medical School with appointments across multiple departments including Pediatrics, Microbiology, Molecular, Cell and Cancer Biology, and several programs within the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. His primary departmental affiliation is in Pediatrics, specifically within the Division of Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. Newburger earned his BA in Chemistry from Haverford College and his MD from Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on hematologic disorders, particularly neutropenia, chronic granulomatous disease, and other blood disorders in children.

With over 150 publications spanning from 1983 to 2025, Dr. Newburger's work has significantly advanced understanding of neutropenia pathophysiology, genetic causes, and treatment approaches. His recent research has focused on ELANE mutations in severe congenital neutropenia, gene therapy approaches, and international consensus guidelines for neutropenia management. His work bridges basic molecular research with clinical applications, particularly in pediatric hematology and immunology.

Dr. Newburger has been instrumental in establishing the Severe Chronic Neutropenia International Registry and has contributed to numerous clinical guidelines for neutropenia management. His work on chronic granulomatous disease has explored both the molecular basis of the disease and potential therapeutic interventions including interferon gamma and gene therapy approaches.

His laboratory investigations have examined the molecular mechanisms of neutrophil development and function, with particular focus on the role of specific genes and proteins in neutropenia pathogenesis. This work has important implications for developing targeted therapies for patients with congenital neutropenia syndromes.
