Dr. Peter Crooks is an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at Trinity College Dublin. He serves as the founding Academic Director of the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland (VRTI), which received the Trinity Innovation Award for Societal Impact and the Roger Ellis Prize. His research focuses on political cultures in medieval Ireland and Britain, particularly the period 1150–1550, and explores comparative colonialism, historiography, and digital humanities. He directs Trinity’s MPhil in Medieval Studies and holds roles in institutions like the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and ADAPT.
His research includes editing the New Cambridge History of Britain, Volume 2 (1100–1500), and co-editing a special issue of Analecta Hibernica on the 1922 fire that destroyed Irish archives. He has published extensively on topics like medieval bureaucracy, colonial governance, and archival reconstruction.

His work integrates digital tools to recover lost archives, exemplified by the VRTI’s Archival Loss and Recovery Model (ALARM). He also leads the CIRCLE calendar project for medieval Irish Chancery Rolls.
