He holds a PhD from UCC, where he has been affiliated since 1999, including postdoctoral research and temporary lectureships before becoming a permanent Lecturer in 2003.
His research explores how classical and medieval texts shaped perceptions of Ireland and its place in global and imperial narratives. Key projects include analyzing Gerald of Wales's Topographia Hibernica and its legacy in shaping Irish identity, as well as investigating the classical and Insular roots of medieval cartography and ethnography.
Awards include a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship (2001) and a National University of Ireland Maynooth Research Fellowship (2012). He has published widely on medieval historiography, including book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and edited volumes. His teaching emphasizes critical engagement with primary sources, particularly visual materials like maps and manuscripts.
He has advised numerous MA students on topics ranging from Bede's historiography to Gerald of Wales's colonial narratives. Scully has also engaged in public outreach, including lectures on medieval maps and cultural heritage, and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects like the British Museum's World Time-Lines.
