Peter Cramton

Peter Cramton is a Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of Maryland and an International Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods. He holds affiliations with the European University Institute and the University of Cologne. His research focuses on auction theory, market design, and their practical applications in spectrum, energy, and climate policy. Cramton advises governments and companies globally on market mechanisms, including spectrum auctions, electricity markets, and carbon pricing. He earned his B.S. in Engineering from Cornell University (1980) and a Ph.D. in Business from Stanford University (1984).

His research interests include designing efficient markets for communications, electricity, and environmental policies. Notable contributions include co-inventing spectrum auction frameworks used in Canada, Australia, and Europe, and pioneering carbon auction mechanisms.
