Peter Covino is an Associate Professor in the English Department at the University of Rhode Island. Formerly a professional social worker with a Master’s from Columbia University, his work integrates his background in foster care, AIDS services, and youth advocacy with his creative pursuits in poetry, translation, and ethnic studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, an M.A. from City College New York, and a B.A. from Amherst College.
His research focuses on avant-garde poetry, Italian-American identity, and queer studies. Covino has published five poetry collections, including The Right Place to Jump (2012) and Cut Off the Ears of Winter (2005), and has translated Dario Bellezza’s What Sex Is Death? (2019), winning the Wisconsin Press Prize. His scholarly essays appear in journals like American Poetry Review and The Paris Review.
He is a recipient of the 2019 NEA Translation Fellowship and PEN/American Osterweil Award (2007). As a founding editor of Barrow Street Press (since 1998), he has overseen the publication of 46 poetry books. He also serves as Poetry Editor of VIA: Voices in Italian Americana and faculty advisor for the Ocean State Review.
