Peter Chua is a Professor of Sociology at San José State University (SJSU), affiliated with the College of Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2001), and prior degrees from the same institution and the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on human rights, migrant rights, neoliberal policies, and the sociological analysis of global crises, including the pandemic's socio-political dimensions. Key projects include 'Refresh Social Practice' initiatives addressing international economic and political crises, and the sociology of the pandemic's impacts on marginalized communities.
Chua’s work critiques cultural racism, neoliberalism, and the legacies of colonialism in sociological knowledge production. He has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters, journal articles, and presentations on topics like migrant labor, gender studies, and development paradigms. His grants include an SJSU Lottery Grant for studying migrant job clusters in U.S. cities. Professional service includes contributions to human rights advocacy in the Philippines and global anti-racism campaigns.
His research also engages with the sociology of health, particularly the politicization of pandemic terminology and responses, emphasizing equity and anti-racist frameworks. Chua’s interdisciplinary approach integrates ethnography, critical theory, and participatory methodologies to address systemic inequalities.
