Dr. Scott Myers-Lipton is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at San José State University (SJSU), specializing in social action, poverty, and institutional justice. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1994), alongside teaching and bachelor’s degrees from Mills College and the University of San Diego. As a scholar-activist, he has authored five influential books on social justice, including CHANGE! series and Ending Extreme Inequality. His research emphasizes student-led policy campaigns, having advised 17 successful campaigns since 2006, such as raising San José’s minimum wage and Gulf Coast post-Katrina job initiatives. He directs the Teaching Social Action program and serves on the SJSU Human Rights Institute’s Advisory Board. Awards include the NAACP Social Justice Award and SJSU’s Distinguished Service Award. Beyond academia, he co-owns The Sequoia event center, focused on social transformation.
