Dr. Peter Chivers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Durham and holds a Visiting Associate Professorship in the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on bacteriology, bioinorganic chemistry, biotechnology, metalloproteins, microbiology, and nickel protein chemistry. He investigates mechanisms of metal ion homeostasis, protein engineering, and bacterial responses to metal availability. Notable work includes studies on nickel trafficking, urease function, and transcriptional regulation by metalloregulators like RcnR and NikR.
His recent publications (2012–2025) explore protein metalation, nickel-sensing pathways, and bacterial adaptation to metal stress. He supervises multiple PhD and MSc students in biosciences and chemistry. No scientific awards are listed, though his extensive publications highlight impactful contributions to bioinorganic research.
