Peter Barnard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, where he has been employed since August 2009. He is affiliated with the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) and leads the Barnard Research Group focused on synthetic inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry.
Education:
- PhD in Bioinorganic Chemistry, University of Sydney, Australia
Peter Barnard is an expert in synthetic inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. His research primarily focuses on the synthesis and characterization of new metal-containing compounds for diagnostic imaging applications (radiopharmaceuticals) and as fluorescent probes for imaging and sensor development. His laboratory specializes in small molecule organic and inorganic synthesis combined with a wide range of analytical techniques including NMR, UV/vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and X-ray crystallography. Key research areas include the synthesis of luminescent and electrochemiluminescent coordination compounds, radiopharmaceutical imaging agents, and the coordination chemistry of amide-containing molecules.
Analysis of Dr. Barnard's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on iridium and rhenium complexes with applications in electrochemiluminescence and bioimaging. His work frequently explores N-heterocyclic carbene ligands and their metal complexes, with applications ranging from diagnostic imaging to antimicrobial agents. More recently, his research has expanded into interdisciplinary areas, including contributions to SARS-CoV-2 immunology research and Alzheimer's disease biomarker studies, demonstrating the versatility and applicability of his chemical expertise to pressing biomedical challenges.
Research Funding:
- A cutting-edge and high-throughput nuclear magnetic resonance platform (Australian Research Council, 2021-2022)
- Victorian Molecular Structure Elucidation Facility (ARC, 2017)
- Electrochemically-sensitized luminescence: A new bio-detection paradigm (ARC Discovery Project, 2015-2019)
- N-heterocyclic carbene and macrobicyclic ligands for Tc-99m and Cu-64 based Molecular Imaging Agents (AINSE Research Project, 2013)
Dr. Barnard serves as Treasurer of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (2020-present). His teaching portfolio includes several chemistry courses at La Trobe University: CHE1APL (Applications of Chemistry), CHE2MOC (Medicinal and Organic Chemistry), CHE2FCB (Fundamentals of Chemistry B), CHE3STC (Synthetic Topics in Chemistry), and CHE3LAB (Advanced Chemistry Laboratory). He has also served as Coordinator for the Master of Chemical Sciences program.
The Barnard Research Group maintains active collaborations across multiple disciplines, with research outputs spanning fundamental inorganic chemistry to applied biomedical research. Their work bridges the gap between synthetic chemistry and practical applications in medical diagnostics and therapeutics.
