Peter Barnard

Peter Barnard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, where he has been employed since August 2009. He is affiliated with the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) and leads the Barnard Research Group focused on synthetic inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry.

Peter Barnard is an expert in synthetic inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. His research primarily focuses on the synthesis and characterization of new metal-containing compounds for diagnostic imaging applications (radiopharmaceuticals) and as fluorescent probes for imaging and sensor development. His laboratory specializes in small molecule organic and inorganic synthesis combined with a wide range of analytical techniques including NMR, UV/vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and X-ray crystallography. Key research areas include the synthesis of luminescent and electrochemiluminescent coordination compounds, radiopharmaceutical imaging agents, and the coordination chemistry of amide-containing molecules.

Analysis of Dr. Barnard's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on iridium and rhenium complexes with applications in electrochemiluminescence and bioimaging. His work frequently explores N-heterocyclic carbene ligands and their metal complexes, with applications ranging from diagnostic imaging to antimicrobial agents.
