Dr. Peter Barbrook-Johnson serves as Departmental Research Lecturer in the Economics of Environmental Change at the University of Oxford, with dual appointments in the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) and the Smith School for Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE) within the School of Geography and the Environment. He holds leadership roles as Deputy Director of the NERC-funded Agile Initiative and Technical Modelling Lead for the UK government's EEIST project on energy transition modeling.
His academic journey includes completing a PhD in agent-based modelling at the University of Surrey in 2014, followed by positions as Senior Research Associate at Oxford, Senior Research Fellow and ESRC Innovation Fellow at Surrey, and Research Fellow at the Policy Studies Institute. His interdisciplinary background bridges sociology, economics, and complexity science.
Barbrook-Johnson's research focuses on applying complexity science to environmental and energy policy challenges through methods like agent-based modeling and participatory systems mapping. His work emphasizes translating theoretical complexity concepts into practical policy tools, particularly for addressing climate change and energy transitions.
