Martha Bicket is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Surrey's Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN), operating at the research-policy interface to enhance evidence-based decision-making for government bodies across local, national, and international levels. Her work focuses on co-creating knowledge through innovative evaluative methods and policy frameworks.
Her academic background includes:
- BSc in Mathematics from the University of Warwick
- MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London
Bicket specializes in developing practical tools for complex policy challenges, including systems mapping with Defra to navigate Brexit-related uncertainty and refining theories of change for the Food Standards Agency's regulatory transformation program. Her research significantly shaped EU sustainability policy through the 2014 European Commission scoping study on circular economy priorities, which directly informed the EU Circular Economy Packages.
She leads major collaborative projects such as the €2-million EU Horizon 2020 MIN-GUIDE initiative, establishing best practices for sustainable minerals policy, and is a lead author for the UK Government's Magenta Book evaluation handbook supplement.
As a core CECAN member, Bicket develops open-source tools like the Participatory System Mapper (PRSM) and contributes to advancing causal systems mapping methodologies through recent conference engagements and journal special issues.
