Peter A. Zimmerman, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology, Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences, and Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Center for Global Health and Diseases. Zimmerman earned his PhD in Biology from Case Western Reserve University in 1992, focusing on parasitic nematode genetics. His postdoctoral training at the NIH with Thomas Nutman explored genetic and immunological factors influencing infectious disease susceptibility, leading to discoveries in HIV resistance and malaria pathogenesis.
Research Interests: Zimmerman’s work investigates genetic polymorphisms in humans and parasites that influence disease susceptibility and resistance, with a focus on malaria (Plasmodium species) and HIV/AIDS. His lab develops molecular diagnostics to track parasite populations and inform malaria control strategies. Recent efforts include targeting mechanisms by which pathogens invade host cells and designing interventions to block infection.
Awards:
- National Research Council Associateship award
Advising & Grants: While specific grant details are not listed, his research has likely involved NIH and other health-focused funding agencies. He mentors students and collaborates across disciplines to advance global health initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Active member of the Center for Global Health and Diseases, integrating field studies with molecular and clinical research to combat infectious diseases globally.
