Peter A. Vanable is a Professor of Psychology and the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Syracuse University. His research focuses on psychological aspects of health and illness, particularly behavioral aspects of HIV/AIDS and addictive behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical/Social Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1998), an M.A. from the same institution (1994), and a B.A. from Kenyon College (1990).
His research interests include coping strategies among individuals living with HIV, interventions to reduce high-risk sexual behavior, and the prevention/treatment of addictive behaviors. He has published extensively on topics such as condom use behavior among college students, framed health messages for HIV prevention, and medication adherence among PLWH.
Dr. Vanable’s work bridges public health, clinical psychology, and behavioral science, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as African American adolescents and individuals living with HIV. He leads the Psychology department and oversees the Graduate School, contributing to academic strategy and student success initiatives.
