Dr Pete Edwards is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of York, affiliated with the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Labs and UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science. His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry processes impacting air pollution and climate change, particularly radical-driven reactions in the troposphere. He develops novel instruments like laser-induced fluorescence and low-cost sensors for field observations, combined with computational modeling. Projects include ERC-funded studies on atomic chlorine chemistry and UKRI QUANT initiatives for urban air quality monitoring in collaboration with Defra and West African nations. Awards include the 2014 Colorado Governor’s Award and 2016 NOAA Outstanding Paper Award.
Education:
- PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry (University of Leeds, 2011)
- Postdoc at NOAA (USA, 2011–2014)
Research Interests: Instrumentation for trace gas detection, radical chemistry, low-cost sensor validation, and policy-relevant atmospheric modeling. Current work spans global projects in the UK and West Africa, emphasizing environmental monitoring innovation.
Grants:
- €1.7M ERC Starting Grant (2018)
- UKRI QUANT Project (£1.2M)
Awards: Colorado Governor’s Award for High-Impact Research (2014), NOAA Outstanding Scientific Paper (2016).
