Dr. Perry Carter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and the Environment at Texas Tech University. His research focuses on social, urban, and economic geography, with a particular emphasis on racial identity construction through spatial narratives, geographic methodologies, and the role of tourism in cultural memory. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Ohio State University (1998).
Dr. Carter's work critically examines how spaces like plantation museums, urban landscapes, and memorial sites encode racial and historical narratives. His recent studies explore the commodification of slavery in Southern tourism, the role of African American museums in cultural landscapes, and the intersection of technology with medical geography. He teaches courses including Economic Geography, Research Methodology, and Social/Cultural Geography.
His research methodologies include virtual ethnography, narrative mapping, and affective geographies. Notable contributions include analyzing visitor perceptions of Southern heritage sites and interrogating the ethics of plantation tourism. His work bridges critical race theory, spatial analysis, and cultural studies to challenge dominant historical narratives.
