Pernilla Stenström is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Pediatrics at Lund University, serving as Deputy Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences. She is also a consultant and specialist with an MD and PhD, focusing on pediatric surgery.
Her educational background includes a Medical Degree (MD) and Doctoral Degree (PhD).
Dr. Stenström's research primarily focuses on pediatric surgical conditions, with special expertise in Hirschsprung's disease and anorectal malformations. Her work integrates advanced diagnostic techniques like ultra-high frequency ultrasound with innovative e-health solutions to improve post-surgical care for children. She actively contributes to defining quality standards in pediatric surgical care across Europe through collaborative initiatives like the ARM-Net Consortium and EPSA|ERNICA Registry Group.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on improving diagnostic methods and postoperative care pathways for children with complex gastrointestinal conditions. She has pioneered research in using ultrasound technology for Hirschsprung's disease diagnosis and implementing digital health tools to bridge the gap between hospital and home care for postoperative pediatric patients.
Her notable scientific contributions include:
- Development of ultra-high frequency ultrasound for diagnosing Hirschsprung's disease
- Implementation of e-health solutions for postoperative pediatric care
- Establishing quality indicators for European pediatric surgical care
- Research on complications following anorectal reconstruction
Dr. Stenström supervises multiple doctoral students and leads several active research projects, including studies on ultra-high frequency ultrasound diagnostics, e-health applications in pediatric care, and congenital hydronephrosis. She serves as Principal Investigator for the 'Tablets as part of e-health' project running through 2026.
She is an active member of the LU Profile Area: Light and Materials and participates in collaborative networks focused on improving pediatric surgical outcomes. Her recent activities include keynotes at the Engineering Health 2024 Fall Retreat and presentations at the 'Barn i fokus' workshop.
