Dr. Periannan Kuppusamy is a Professor of Radiology and Medicine at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, with adjunct roles in Engineering and Chemistry. He holds the rank of Professor and has held the William D. and Jacquelyn L. Wells Chair in Imaging Research. His expertise spans free radicals, oxygen biology in cardiovascular diseases and cancer, and the development of EPR-based imaging methods for biomedical applications.
Dr. Kuppusamy earned his BSc (Chemistry, Physics, Math) and MSc (Chemistry) from the University of Madras (1975–1977), followed by a PhD in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai (1985). His career includes roles at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Ohio State University prior to Dartmouth.
His research focuses on oxygen sensing, EPR imaging, and clinical oximetry, with innovations like the OxyChip (currently in clinical trials). Key contributions include the development of EPR imaging techniques for biomedical applications, for which he received the Silver Medal from the International EPR Society (2006) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Pecs (2008).
He has published over 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts and holds patents on oxygen-sensing probes. His work integrates engineering, chemistry, and medicine to advance diagnostics and therapies, particularly in cancer and cardiovascular research.
Awards include the Distinguished Mentor Award (2006), Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award (2011), and Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Chennai (2015). His grants include funding from the NIH and American Heart Association.
Dr. Kuppusamy’s lab develops implantable sensors and EPR-based technologies, with a focus on translational research. His teams collaborate across disciplines to address critical challenges in oxygen dynamics and disease mechanisms.
