Per Carlsson is a Senior Lecturer at Lund University's Aquatic Ecology and Functional Ecology departments, focusing on marine microbial food webs and plankton interactions. His research explores phytoplankton ecology, dinoflagellate toxin production, zooplankton behavior, and climate change impacts. Current projects include invasive species (Penilia avirostris) effects, phytoplankton phenotypic plasticity in warming oceans, and harbour porpoise distribution in the Kattegat region.
He has authored 29 publications and manages grants from institutions like FORMAS. Notable awards include the 2025 Lund Students’ Prize for Excellence in Teaching and the 2024 Science Student Union Pedagogical Prize. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to life below water and sustainable development.
Carlsson collaborates internationally and has led projects on harmful algal blooms, marine mammal diets, and nuclear power plant radioecology. His research emphasizes ecosystem-based restoration and understanding anthropogenic pressures on marine systems.
