Penny Cook is Professor of Public Health and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at University of Salford's School of Health and Society. Her research focuses on public health interventions addressing alcohol harm, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and nature-based wellbeing initiatives.
Cook leads significant research projects including an MRC/NIHR-funded parenting intervention for FASD caregivers and the Horizon Europe GreenME project scaling nature-based mental health interventions. Her FASD prevalence research indicating 2-4% UK prevalence received international media attention.
Research encompasses sexual health, alcohol harm reduction, FASD screening/intervention, green space benefits, and physical activity promotion. Cook employs mixed-methods approaches to develop evidence-based public health strategies addressing health inequalities.
Recent publications investigate FASD screening experiences, community alcohol interventions, green care methodologies, and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Articles demonstrate consistent focus on vulnerable populations and innovative intervention development.
Teaching includes public health epidemiology and health intervention design. Cook supervises doctoral research on alcohol harm, FASD, and green space interventions.
Leadership roles include Chair of University Academic Ethics Committee and editorial responsibilities for nursing journals. Cook has secured research funding from NIHR, MRC, EU Horizon, and major charities.
