Peng Zhang is Professor of Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati, where he leads a research group focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology applications. His research spans multiple interdisciplinary areas including surface-enhanced spectroscopies, nanoparticle-based sensors, and photodynamic therapy. Dr. Zhang has established himself as a leader in developing novel nanomaterials for biomedical and analytical applications.
Dr. Zhang received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Toronto. His academic journey includes positions at New Mexico Tech (Assistant Professor 2004-2009, Associate Professor 2009) before joining the University of Cincinnati (Associate Professor 2010, Professor 2022).
His research interests center on the development of chemical and biochemical sensors based on catalytical nanoparticles and photon upconversion nanoparticles, nanoparticle-based photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy against bacteria and cancers, nanostructures for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) applications, and synthesis of nanomaterials with photon upconversion properties. His work bridges chemistry, materials science, and biomedical engineering with a strong focus on practical applications.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a clear trend toward increasingly sophisticated nanomaterial designs for biomedical applications, with particular emphasis on photodynamic therapy, bacterial inactivation, and advanced sensing techniques. His work demonstrates a progression from fundamental nanomaterial synthesis to increasingly complex biological applications.
Dr. Zhang has received significant funding from major agencies including the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense (DMRDP), National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, and institutional sources. His work has resulted in multiple patents related to nanoparticle-based sensing and photodynamic therapy.
He has mentored numerous doctoral students who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry. His research group maintains active collaborations across multiple disciplines. Dr. Zhang also serves on review panels for NSF, NIH, and other major funding agencies, demonstrating his standing in the scientific community.
