Dr. Penelope Wilson is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Earth Sciences at University College London, based in the Kathleen Lonsdale Building. She is also an Undergraduate Tutor and contributes to courses such as GEOL0006 Surface Processes (as Module Leader), GEOL0010 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, and GEOL0024 Geological and Environmental Mapping. Her research focuses on two core areas: magma ascent/emplacement mechanisms in shallow crustal environments and geotourism-related hazards and risk perception.
Her structural and igneous geology research integrates fieldwork in Utah’s Henry Mountains with microstructural analysis (SEM), quantitative fracture studies, and 3D GIS modeling. Research themes include magma-host rock interactions, deformation structures, and implications for subsurface intrusion geometry. In geotourism, she explores hazard monitoring, risk mapping, and stakeholder awareness in high-risk geological sites.
Wilson’s work has been featured in Journal of Structural Geology (2016) and she actively engages with public outreach via media interviews and surveys on geotourism risks. She collaborates with the Crust Dynamics & Evolution and Natural and Environmental Hazards research groups at UCL.
