Penelope Shumate

Penelope Shumate is an Associate Professor of Voice and former Director of the Opera Workshop at Austin Peay State University. A celebrated soprano, she specializes in vocal performance and pedagogy, with extensive engagements across opera, concert performances, and recordings. Her career includes over 20 soloist appearances at Carnegie Hall and collaborations with orchestras worldwide.

Education:

• B.S. in Vocal Performance and Radio/TV Broadcasting, Radford University

Research & Performance Focus: Her work bridges vocal technique, opera repertoire, and contemporary performance challenges. She is noted for roles in La Traviata, Carmen, and Carmina Burana, with recordings on Signum, Navona, and Klavier Records.

Awards: Winner of the American Prize, Chicago Oratorio Award, and Gerda Lissner Foundation, among others. Her teaching has earned university-wide recognition, including the Provost’s Award for Scholarly Activities.
