Penelope Maddy is a Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where she holds an affiliation with the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Philosophy. Her work focuses on foundational questions in mathematics, logic, and their relations to natural science, alongside meta-philosophical inquiries and historical philosophy.
She earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her research interests include the methodology of set theory, naturalism (particularly her own 'second philosophy'), skepticism, and the historical contributions of thinkers like Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Reid, Kant, Frege, Wittgenstein, Moore, Austin, Carnap, and Quine. She has consistently taught advanced seminars on topics such as the philosophy of mathematics, logic, perception, and skepticism, as well as foundational issues in vision and the role of mathematics in applications.
Maddy’s meta-philosophical work explores therapeutic approaches, conceptual analysis, and the diagnostic role of skepticism across different philosophical schools. Her seminars reflect a deep engagement with both historical and contemporary debates in philosophy, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections with science and mathematics.
