Pen Mendonça

Pen Mendonça is an Associate Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies at the London College of Communication (part of the University of the Arts London). She is a pioneering independent graphic facilitator and cartoonist with 20 years of experience in the UK public and voluntary sectors. Her work focuses on visual methods for representing diversity and social justice, including disability rights, the Windrush Crisis, and modern slavery. She holds a PhD from Central Saint Martins, UAL, where she developed 'Values-Based Cartooning' as a research methodology.

Her research interests span graphic facilitation, feminist representation, and maternal experiences. Current exhibitions include work on women in academia at the University of Birmingham. She contributes to journals like Studies in Comics and Women: A Cultural Review.

Pen collaborates with the Comics Research Hub at UAL, advocating for visual storytelling as a tool for social advocacy. Her projects emphasize intersectionality and inclusive representation through comics and visual narratives.
