Peitao Zhu is an Associate Professor of Counseling in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he joined the faculty in Fall 2020. His research focuses on cultural humility, counselor education pedagogy, theoretical/philosophical issues in counseling, complex trauma, and group counseling.
- Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education, Syracuse University
- M.A. in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine
- B.S. in Biotechnology, Fudan University
Professor Zhu's scholarship centers on the integration of cultural humility into counseling processes, trauma-informed practices, and innovative pedagogical approaches in counselor training. His recent publications examine LGBTQ+ identity in cross-cultural contexts, integrated behavioral healthcare challenges, and the development of assessment tools for cultural humility.
He has received multiple research grants including awards from ASGW, AARC, SACES, and NIU's College of Education. His service includes editorial board memberships at top journals like Counselor Education and Supervision and Journal for Specialists in Group Work. As a National Certified Counselor (NCC), he maintains a clinical focus on complex trauma.
