Pehr Harbury is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he holds additional appointments as a Faculty Fellow in Bio-X and Sarafan ChEM-H, and as a member of the Stanford Cancer Institute. His research focuses on developing innovative experimental approaches to problems in molecular biochemistry with broad technological impact.
Harbury received his B.A. in Biochemistry from Harvard University in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from Harvard Medical School in 1994.
His research interests span molecular biochemistry, structural biology, and genomic imaging, with a particular focus on developing novel technologies for biological research. The Harbury Lab explores chemical evolution, X-ray interferometry, and in situ structural biology to create tools that reveal hidden truths of nature and enable engineering of biological systems. Current projects include developing PLISH (Proximity Ligation in situ Hybridization) for single-cell profiling in intact tissues, X-ray Scattering Interferometry for nucleic acid structure analysis, and ultrasensitive optical imaging techniques using lanthanide lumiphores.
Analysis of Harbury's recent publications reveals a strong focus on developing and applying novel imaging and structural biology techniques. His work bridges molecular biochemistry with technological innovation, particularly in the areas of single-cell analysis, 3D tissue mapping, and advanced microscopy. Many publications involve collaborative efforts through the NIH Human Biomolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP), reflecting his role as a technology developer for large-scale tissue mapping initiatives.
Harbury has received numerous prestigious awards throughout his career:
- Fellow, Damon-Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Foundation (1995)
- Terman Fellow, Lucille Packard Charitable Trust (1998)
- Young Innovator Award, MIT Technology Review Magazine (1999)
- Searle Scholar, Chicago Community Trust (1999)
- Young Investigator in the Pharmacological Sciences, Burroughs Wellcome Fund (2000)
- Schering-Plough Award, ASBMB (2004)
- Fellow, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (2005)
- Director's Pioneer Award, NIH (2005)
As an educator, Harbury serves as Doctoral Dissertation Reader for students including Peter Cavanagh, Claire Chiang, Maria Nguyen, Kwamina Nyame, and Kevin Shih. He teaches courses including Applied Biochemistry (BIOC 200), Development of Thesis Research (BIOC 350), and Frontiers in Biological Research (BIOC 215). He also mentors students through various directed reading and research programs in Biochemistry and Biophysics.
The Harbury Lab functions as a technology development hub within Stanford's broader biomedical research ecosystem, collaborating with the HuBMAP Consortium and other initiatives focused on mapping the human body at cellular resolution. The lab's work bridges basic science with translational applications, particularly in lung biology and tissue engineering.
