Peggy Levitt is the Mildred Lane Kemper Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College, where she also serves as Chair of the Department of Sociology. She co-founded the Global (De)Centre, an interdisciplinary research initiative. Her work focuses on cultural and intellectual inequality, transnational social protection, migration, and the role of museums in shaping global narratives. Levitt has held distinguished roles, including co-director of Harvard’s Transnational Studies Initiative and fellowships at institutions such as the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency Program and the European University Institute.

Her research bridges sociology, cultural studies, and global policy. Recent projects examine decentered knowledge production in academia and equitable access to cultural institutions. Key publications include Transnational Social Protection (2023) and an upcoming book on reimagining global universities and museums. She has received honorary degrees from the University of Helsinki (2017) and Maastricht University (2014).
Levitt’s teaching emphasizes global collaboration, including a course on decolonizing social theory through transnational student-faculty partnerships. She has led initiatives to diversify academic canons and pedagogical practices worldwide.
