Peeter Espak is an Associate Professor of Sumerian Mythology and Literature at the University of Tartu's Institute of Cultural Research (Faculty of Arts and Humanities). He holds academic positions since 2021, with prior roles as Senior Research Fellow and researcher in Sumerology and Near Eastern Cultural History. His research focuses on Ancient Near Eastern philology, religious history, and mythology, particularly Sumerian texts and deities like Enki. He has received prestigious awards, including the Akadeemia Article Prize in 2013 and 2010. Espak has led projects on ancient mythology, royal ideologies, and socio-political structures, funded by Estonian research councils. He actively participates in academic societies such as the Estonian Oriental Society and the Society of Biblical Literature. His work bridges ancient cultural studies with contemporary discourse, addressing topics like divine warfare, creation myths, and the intersection of theology and politics.
