Peer Zumbansen is a Full Professor of Business Law at McGill University's Faculty of Law, joining in January 2021. Previously, he served as Founding Director of the Transnational Law Institute at King’s College London (2014–2018) and held professorships at Osgoode Hall Law School (2004–2020), where he launched the Critical Research Laboratory in Law & Society with CFI and SSHRC grants. He also served as Associate Dean for Research, Graduate Studies, and International Relations at Osgoode. His academic journey includes a Habilitation and doctorate from Goethe-University Frankfurt, an LL.M. from Harvard, and studies in law and philosophy across Frankfurt, Paris, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a co-founder and co-editor of the German Law Journal (2000–2013, now under Cambridge University Press) and editor of Transnational Legal Theory and the McGill Business Meter Blog.
His research focuses on transnational law, legal theory, corporate governance, and global economic governance. He has held visiting professorships at over 20 institutions worldwide, including Yale, Michigan, and King’s College London. Notable achievements include founding the Transnational Law Summit in 2018 and directing the LL.M. Program in Transnational Law at King’s College London. He has held two Canada Research Chairs (2004–2014) and authored/co-authored over 20 books and numerous articles on transnational legal frameworks, corporate governance, and global legal pluralism.
Professional experience spans clerkships at the Federal Constitutional Court (Karlsruhe) and Frankfurt Regional Court, part-time legal practice with Taylor Wessing and White & Case, and roles as editor, speaker, and academic leader globally. His work bridges legal theory with socio-economic realities, addressing issues like global supply chain liability, transnational legal authority, and the evolving role of law in multinational contexts.
