Peer Illner

Peer Illner is a Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen (2013-2017) and previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (2017-2021) and Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Manchester (2021-2023). His research focuses on Critical Disaster Studies, Social Movement History, Social Reproduction Theory, and Marxist-Feminism.

Key research interests include the interplay between disaster response, state-civil society relations, and radical political theory. He has authored books such as Disasters and Social Reproduction: Crisis Response between the State and Community (2021) and edited volumes like Unworking (2021). His work bridges cultural studies with Marxist critiques of capitalism and explores themes like mutual aid networks, unworking as a political paradigm, and the role of art in activism.

Recent publications analyze Airbnb's impact on urban politics (2024) and the cultural logic of low-growth capitalism (2020). His articles often critique neoliberalism’s effects on social reproduction and disaster management.
