Pedro Rodrigues dos Santos Russo

Pedro Rodrigues dos Santos Russo is an Associate Professor at Leiden University, affiliated with the Department of Science Communication & Society and Leiden Observatory. He coordinates the Astronomy & Society group and serves as President of the International Astronomical Union Commission on Communicating Astronomy with the Public. Previously, he led the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009), the largest global astronomy outreach effort, coordinating activities across 148 countries. His work focuses on using astronomy to promote STEM education, public engagement, and societal development.

Russo holds a PhD in Planetary Atmospheres from the Max Planck Institute and has extensive experience in science communication, including roles at ESO and the Navegar Foundation. He has authored over 50 publications, edited the Communicating Astronomy with the Public Journal, and pioneered initiatives like EU Universe Awareness, which uses astronomy to empower underprivileged youth globally.

His research interests span planetary science, astronomy education, and the intersection of science with culture. Awards include the AAAS SPORE Award and Portugal’s National Multimedia Prize. Russo advises numerous graduate and postgraduate students on projects linking astronomy to societal challenges, such as astrotourism, cultural heritage preservation, and inclusive education.
