Pedro Rivera

Professor Pedro Rivera holds the position of Professor in Structural Materials at the University of Southampton since February 2023. Previously, he was a professor at Lancaster University (2017-2023) and Deputy Director of the Steel Technology Centre at the University of Cambridge (2009-2017). He currently leads a research group focused on alloy and microstructure design for additive manufacturing, with emphasis on metallurgical challenges such as hydrogen embrittlement and rolling contact fatigue.

His research interests include alloy design, microstructure-property relationships, additive manufacturing, rolling contact fatigue, and hydrogen embrittlement. Notable projects involve developing sustainable alloys for additive manufacturing and modeling deformation behavior in aerospace materials. He has secured a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair (RAERC) since 2017, which supports his work on alloy design for advanced manufacturing processes.

Recent publications highlight advancements in computational modeling of welding processes, precipitation-hardening steels, and tribological systems. His work has resulted in three international patents and over 175 journal articles. Prof. Rivera currently supervises four PhD students in the fields of engineering and environmental sciences.

Awards include the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair, reflecting his contributions to structural materials innovation. His research bridges experimental techniques with computational models to address industrial challenges in automotive, aerospace, and energy sectors.
