Pedro Marquez-Zacarias is a Purépecha biologist currently serving as a Research Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute. His work bridges theoretical and empirical approaches to studying biological complexity, microbial ecology, and science communication.
- PhD in Quantitative Biosciences from Georgia Institute of Technology
- Undergraduate degree in Biomedical Research from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
Research interests include:
- Origins and evolution of biological complexity through Robert Rosen's framework of closure to efficient causation
- Language evolution with a focus on his native Purépecha language isolate
- Science communication through bilingual written and audiovisual media
- Education equity for indigenous, undocumented, and refugee communities
Recent research applies metagenomics and computational models to:
- Study microbial community responses to environmental perturbations
- Explore evolutionary transitions in multicellularity
- Investigate biogeochemical cycles in oligotrophic ecosystems
- Document microbial diversity across diverse habitats like Chihuahuan Desert oases and Antarctic penguin colonies
Scientific awards include:
- Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow
- Science ATL Fellow
- The Open Notebook Science Communication Fellow (Burroughs Wellcome Fund)
His outreach work spans:
- Co-founding the bilingual science blog Biomusings
- Volunteer teaching at Atlanta's Freedom University for undocumented students
- Collaboration with refugee education organizations Books not Bombs and The Global Village Project
