Payal Banerjee is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Smith College, specializing in globalization, migration, and state policies. She holds a Ph.D. from Syracuse University and a B.S. from Wilson College. Her research examines H-1B visa holders’ labor experiences in the U.S., anti-Chinese persecution in postcolonial India, and transnational security dynamics. She co-authored India China: Rethinking Borders and Security (2016) and contributed to the UNRISD and BRICS Policy Center. Banerjee has been honored with the Sherrerd Prize and SGA Teaching Award for her pedagogy, which includes courses on gender, global political economy, and Bollywood globalization. She is affiliated with Smith’s Study of Women and Gender (SWG) and South Asian Studies programs.
Her work bridges academia and policy, addressing topics like green growth, dam projects, and transnational subcontracting. She has presented at global forums including the UNRISD, Jeju Forum, and Georgetown University in Doha. Her research emphasizes the intersection of race, state power, and labor in global contexts.
