Dr. Pawel Gaca is a Principal Enterprise Fellow at the University of Southampton specializing in Anthropocene studies and environmental science. His research focuses on identifying potential Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) that could formally define the beginning of the Anthropocene epoch through analysis of various environmental archives including lake sediments, ice cores, coral reefs, and estuarine systems.
His research interests encompass:
- Anthropocene stratigraphy and geological markers of human impact
- Microplastics and contaminant monitoring in estuarine environments
- Paleoenvironmental reconstruction using varved sediments and other natural archives
- Environmental change indicators across diverse ecosystems
- Actinide bioavailability and radioactive contamination assessment
Dr. Gaca's publication record demonstrates a systematic approach to identifying candidate sites for the Anthropocene boundary across multiple continents and environmental systems. His work spans from Crawford Lake in Canada to coral reefs in Australia and the Baltic Sea, creating a comprehensive global dataset for evaluating human impacts on Earth systems.
He has presented externally on specialized analytical techniques, including "210Pb analysis by LSC" in 2023, highlighting his expertise in radiometric dating methods essential for establishing environmental chronologies. His research combines field sampling with advanced laboratory analysis to document the geological signatures of the Anthropocene.
