Dr. Paulo Henrique Silva Pelicioni is a leading researcher in neurorehabilitation and aging, affiliated with UNSW Sydney's School of Physiotherapy. His work focuses on preventing falls in neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease, and developing telehealth tools for neurorehabilitation. He has held grants including a 2022 Michael J Fox Foundation grant (USD 373,076) studying Parkinson's in Māori and Pacific communities. His research integrates FNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) to study cortical activity during gait and balance tasks. Pelicioni holds a PhD in Public Health and has authored over 40 journal articles, with a focus on telehealth applications, Parkinson's subtypes, and exercise interventions for older adults. Awards include the 2022 Impact and Engagement Award for community engagement initiatives.
Education: PhD in Public Health (UNSW 2020), MSc in Human Movement Science (UNESP 2014), BPT in Physiotherapy (Anhanguera College 2010). He has supervised research projects on Parkinson's disease mechanisms and indigenous health equity. Grants include projects on telerehabilitation for Alzheimer's patients and urinary incontinence management in neurological populations. His lab explores wearable tech for fall prevention and culturally responsive care for indigenous communities with neurological disorders.
Key research themes: 1) Neurological assessment tools via telehealth, 2) Parkinson's disease disparities in indigenous populations, 3) FNIRS-based motor control studies. Recent work evaluates reliability of remote gait assessments and the role of dyskinesia in postural instability. Pelicioni collaborates globally, having conducted research in Brazil, New Zealand, and Germany.
