Paulo Azevedo

Paulo Azevedo serves as Interim Principal Investigator at CIBIO-InBIO, Universidade do Porto, and holds an invited full professorship at the University of Porto. He leads a mixed research group focused on the future compatibility of socio-economic systems and Earth systems. His professional roles include Chairman of Sonae and related companies, former CEO of Sonae and Sonaecom, and leadership in organizations such as the ERT European Roundtable for Industry, Allianz SE International Advisory Board, and the Sustainable Growth Platform. He chairs the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation, Espaço-T, and Viridia, emphasizing education, biodiversity, social care for seniors, and nature conservation.

Education: Holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, an MBA from Porto Business School, and has completed executive leadership and sustainability courses at top academic institutions.

Research interests span interdisciplinary sustainability challenges, particularly integrating socio-economic dynamics with ecological systems. His work addresses global environmental compatibility through academic and corporate collaborations.

He previously chaired the Board of Trustees of Porto University and the Installation Committee of BIOPOLIS, an international center for environmental biology and agro-biodiversity research. His advisory roles and philanthropic activities reflect a commitment to applying academic insights to real-world societal and environmental issues.
