Paulien van Bentum is an Education Coordinator at the Chemistry Education Institute within Utrecht University's Faculty of Science, where she has worked since November 2015. Her responsibilities include organizing secondary education activities (VWO), orientation days, open days, and coordinating the traveling Gas Chromatography & Catalysis Lab (www.gcindeklas.nl). She also serves as the alumni relations officer and secretary of the Chemistry Chamber (examination board).
- Education: Holds an MSc degree, currently completing her PhD in Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics under Dr. Eefjan Breukink.
Her research focuses on biochemistry, specifically lipid engineering to enhance protein secretion efficiency in Bacillus subtilis, targeting membrane and cell wall dynamics. She employs techniques like thin-layer chromatography (TLC), in vitro cell wall synthesis assays, and mass spectrometry.
Paulien integrates her research expertise in integrative bioinformatics with educational outreach, emphasizing practical applications of chemistry in industrial contexts such as enzyme production. Her work spans both academic research and organizational leadership in chemistry education.
