Paula Leverage serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of French at Purdue University with cross-appointments in Comparative Literature and affiliations across Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies, and the Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance for Film and Video Production.
She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1999, establishing her academic foundation in medieval literary studies and cognitive approaches to text analysis.
Her research pioneers the NeuroHumanities field through Cognitive Literary Theory, specializing in audience reception and memory processes in Medieval French Literature—particularly Old French epic poetry (chansons de geste). She critically examines Medievalism in contemporary media through Film Studies, connecting historical narratives to modern cinematic representations and cognitive frameworks.
Dr. Leverage actively contributes to Purdue's Center for NeuroHumanities and interdisciplinary initiatives including Cornerstone programs, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and gender/sexuality scholarship. Her teaching portfolio features courses like French Cinema (FR330) and The Middle Ages on Film (LC333), blending literary analysis with cinematic interpretation.
